National microbiome initiative aims to advance microbiome science

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), in collaboration with Federal agencies and private-sector stakeholders, announced the National Microbiome Initiative (NMI) on May 13, 2016. The NMI has been put in place with the eventual goal of applying advances in the microbiome field to areas such as health care, food production, and environmental restoration.

Despite all the advances we have already seen in the growing microbiome field, this is an exciting advancement for the field. NMI will depend on a strong base of public and private support. The NMI will continue the momentum of the microbiome field, coordinating and connecting ongoing efforts and catalyzing new activities to develop platform technologies, support interdisciplinary research, and expand the microbiome workforce.
